Newsletter 09/03/2013

Greetings Backcountry Kinsmen,

Drab day? Not anymore! Following is this week’s POC newsletter.

PAST TENSE

We threw down on some throw downs this past Labor Day weekend; here’s what happened.

Some tough kiddos drove to the grand state of CO to get their asses handed to them by some 14ers. It was cruel and grueling, but those who summited are feeling pretty accomplished and not the least bit sore.

Thankfully, our kayakers came back with the same amount of homo sapiens (and paddles) that they left with. The North Carolina rapids were no match for our prepared bangarangers. Mariah saved Katherine from the tide with a perfectly performed rescue procedure.

Myself and a few other torpedoes climbed at the Red in BEAUTIFUL weather if I say so myself. We quoted Youtube videos thoroughly and painfully. A summary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JPpM1nFLAE and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUJYmW8g_sc.

Graham went to Hoosier National Forest got hammered. By a storm, of course.

Laura saw a yellow leaf which means… LEAF KEEPING SEASON IS ALMOST HERE!

Alex got chased by a storm while riding his tricycle. Max rode his big wheel in Chicago.

PRESENT TENSE

In case you don’t know by now, there’s a cookout tomorrow at 500 Hayes Street, West Lafayette, at 7pm. There will be a wide selection of grilled foods available, even for vegetarians. We encourage all members, old and especially new, to attend. It’ll be a fabulous opportunity to meet all POCers and get your foot in the woods, so to speak. NO ALCOHOL no matter what your age. This is a club event and we have a special secret dark cave that we will condemn you to if you mess with our university status. The house is within walking distance from campus but if you absolutely must, email Max (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.">This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) if you need a ride. There’s a roll session at 8pm so kayakers are attending both before the roll session and after. We’re gonna stay up ‘til midnight because college.

Keep your ear to the tree about a community service event with the POC down at Red River Gorge. Further information to come.

Mountain bikers are getting a new setup, if I heard right. We’ve got four bikes now, but we’ve got four more bikes, a bike rack, and a tire pump on their way. Quality shit right there.

On Tuesday, September 17th, we will be having our drivers cert./pizza party meeting. Certified drivers are needed for official club events like POCtoberfest and POCAR. You don’t need to actually drive, but we’ll need you in the car when we do these events. Things to bring: your laptop, your driver’s license, and your insurance card. Don’t have a car? No worries; bring a copy front and back of your parent’s insurance card.

We’re working on getting some rad shirts for POCtoberfest so if you have design ideas, email them to Kuku (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.">This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or PJ (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.">This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

Caleb is looking for a new gear consultant to open the closet. This is a great leadership opportunity but also requires enormous responsibility. Email him at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.">This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if interested.

FUTURE TENSE

Alex Steenman is looking to go to the Red to climb in two weekends.

Katherine, our trusty co-climbing consultant, is looking to schedule a beginner trip soon, so keeps your ears perked for that.

We’re looking for a few extra EXPERIENCED climbers to hop in a car to the Red, leaving Saturday the 21st and returning Monday night, the 23rd. You’d have to skip class Monday. Email me (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.">This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) if you’re interested and include your level of experience in the email.

Gauley Fest is a kayaking event held on the New River in West Virginia occurring September 20th-21st. Email Mariah (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.">This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) if interested.

Kayakers! If you want to be invited on trips, you must attend roll sessions (you should all receive emails about roll sessions) and nail your roll. Caesar and the other kayaking consultants do not send out emails invited people on trips, so if you want to kayak outdoors, you have to come to roll session. They’re looking to go to East Race in three weeks so get that roll!

Last but never least, POCtoberfest. This exceptional event is held every year in the New River Gorge in West Virginia. We’re looking at approximately $56 per person for four nights of camping and a pizza party. This does not include gas money and other food you may buy. You must pay the fee before being allowed to go, so we’ll let you know when we’re accepting money. But not yet. The New plays host to all our sports, including climbing, mountain biking, kayaking (you need your roll to go on a kayaking trip at the New!!), caving, backpacking, Biscuit World, Cards Against Humanity, and leaf keeping. Absolutely no alcohol is allowed since this is an official club event. Prerequisites including knowing the lyrics to Country Roads in three different languages. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vrEljMfXYo

After an extensive but informative casting of all things POC, I wish you an adventurous week.

Relax and Look Ahead,

Sara
